1: Inspect & Document
The first step in our moss prevention process is to thoroughly document the condition of your roof. During our initial inspection or treatment, we create a detailed roof health record that includes photographs, observations, and key information about the roof’s current condition. We document areas of existing moss or algae growth, shingle condition, drainage and debris, flashing, penetrations, and other factors that may affect the roof’s long-term performance. This initial record establishes a baseline that allows us to monitor changes over time, identify potential concerns early, and provide a clear history of the care and maintenance performed on your roof.
2: Prevent
Once we understand the roof’s condition, we select an appropriate treatment to help control moss, algae, and organic growth while protecting the roofing materials. Whenever practical, we prioritize more environmentally conscious solutions, such as sodium percarbonate-based products, while selecting the treatment best suited to the roof’s specific condition. Our goal is not simply to remove existing growth, but to help prevent its return and support the long-term health of the roof.
3) Monitor
Our service doesn’t end when the initial treatment is complete. We schedule a follow-up inspection approximately 6–12 months after the work is performed to assess the roof’s condition, monitor for returning moss or organic growth, and determine whether any additional maintenance is recommended. This ongoing monitoring helps keep your roof on track for long-term health and protection.

1. Moss can lift the edges of shingles
As moss becomes thicker, it grows underneath the lower edges of shingles.
This can:

Slightly lift the shingle edge.
-
Allow wind-driven rain to penetrate more easily.
-
Increase the chance that wind catches and damages shingles.
This is especially a concern on older roofs where the shingles have already become less flexible.
2. Reducing Moisture exposure (probably the most important reason
Moss acts like a sponge, absorbing rainwater and holding moisture against the shingles long after the rest of the roof has dried. Asphalt shingles are designed to shed water and dry relatively quickly.
Prolonged moisture can:

Keep shingles damp for much longer after rain.

Increase the amount of time the roofing materials are exposed to moisture.

Slow the drying of the roof deck underneath.
Over many years, repeated wetting and slow drying can contribute to premature aging of roofing materials.
3. Reducing Freeze-Thaw Stress
In climates with freezing temperatures, moss holds water that can freeze.
As water freezes it expands, which can:

Increase mechanical stress on shingles.

Widen tiny cracks over repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

Contribute to deterioration over many winters.
This effect is most significant in regions that experience frequent freezing.
4. Roots (rhizoids) can cling tightly to a shingles granular UV protective material
Moss doesn't have true roots, but it has structures called rhizoids that anchor it to the surface.
They generally do not penetrate deeply through asphalt shingles like plant roots into soil. However, they can grip the rough mineral granules very tightly.
Removing mature moss without care can sometimes pull away protective granules from the shingle surface.
